How to Find Your Signature Method and Turn Your Expertise Into a Book

Oct 22, 2026

Quick answer: A signature method is the repeatable process you already use to get clients results, named and structured so other people can understand it. To find yours, name the core transformation you create, list everything you always do with clients, group it into 3 to 6 phases, name each phase and explain why it matters. That structure can then become the backbone of a method or framework book.

Here's something I see again and again with experienced business owners.

They're brilliant at what they do. Their clients get real results. And yet when I ask them to explain how they do it, they pause. They say something like "I just sort of... know what to do."

That's not a lack of method. That's a method living in your head.

Most established business owners already have a signature method. They deliver it instinctively, intuitively and brilliantly. They've just never put a structure around it. And that structure is often the thing standing between them and their book.

Let's find yours, and turn it into a book that makes you the person who wrote the book on it.

What is a signature method?

Your signature method is how your expertise becomes a structured, repeatable and recognisable process. It's the pathway you take people through to get from where they are now to where they want to be.

I like to think of it this way. Your edge is who you are. Your signature method is how your brilliance becomes a system.

It's the bridge from intuition to structure, and from "I'm good at what I do" to "here's my intellectual property".

Mine is The AUTHORity® Book Formula™. It's the process I take every author through, from aligning their book with their business right through to launch. Before it had a name, it was just "how I work". Now it's the framework my book, my programmes and my content are all built around.

Why does your edge come before your method?

Most business owners try to fix the wrong problem first. They try to fix visibility when the real issue is messaging. They try to fix messaging when the real issue is positioning. And they try to fix positioning when the real issue is identity.

Everything starts with your edge. And your edge is not your niche, your job title or your offer. It's your identity made visible.

I break it into four pillars:

  • Identity: your lived experience, your values and the worldview behind your work. You can teach a skill. You can't teach a lived experience.
  • Skill: the brilliance you've normalised. The things you could do in your sleep that other people struggle with.
  • Perspective: your opinions, what frustrates you about your industry, the rules you break and what you stand for. People don't follow you because of what you do. They follow you because of how you think.
  • Transformation: the before and after only you can create. Not your deliverables. The change people feel.

The trouble is, you get so close to your own competence that you forget how exceptional it is. What feels obvious to you often feels transformational to everyone else. And anything invisible to you becomes invisible to your audience.

A quick exercise to find the threads of your edge

Grab a notebook and write freely. No editing, no polishing.

  1. What do clients consistently say about you?
  2. What feels easy to you but hard for others?
  3. What beliefs do you hold that challenge your industry?
  4. What do you do differently from your peers?
  5. What transformation do people experience because of you?

Your answers are the first threads of your edge, and very often your method is hiding in question four.

Why does a signature method matter for your business and your book?

A signature method does three really important things.

It makes your work tangible

People need to understand what you do, how you do it, why it's different and what the journey feels like. Even if your work is intuitive or identity-based, structure creates clarity, safety and trust. Your method is where people finally "get it".

It positions you as the expert

Experts have methods. Generalists don't. A clear framework tells the market, "I don't just get results. I have a repeatable way of creating them." Clients feel safer investing, your content becomes more magnetic and your sales conversations get easier.

It sets your offers apart

Lots of people sell similar services. Nobody has your edge, and nobody has your method. Once it's articulated, your business stops feeling like a collection of offers and starts feeling like one joined-up body of work.

And here's why this matters so much for your book. In my book, AUTHORity, I talk about the method or framework book as one of the most powerful types of authority-building book there is. It positions you as the originator of an approach, rather than simply a service provider. You're not just sharing information. You're introducing a way of thinking that reflects your perspective and expertise. Readers can follow it, apply it and remember it long after they've finished reading.

What are the four elements of a signature method?

Every strong signature method has these four parts, whether your work is strategic, mindset-led, creative or a mix of everything.

  1. The Anchor: your core philosophy. The belief that shapes everything you do. Think "identity comes before strategy" or "simplicity scales". It's the lens your whole method works through.
  2. The Phases: the steps of the journey. Aim for 3 to 6. Any more and people get confused and overwhelmed.
  3. The Proof: why your way works. Your lived experience, real client examples, your professional background and how you've refined your approach over time.
  4. The Promise: the transformation you deliver. Not the modules or what's included. Who your client becomes and how they feel at the end.

How do I build my signature method, step by step?

This is where the method you've been delivering intuitively becomes articulated and structured.

  1. Name the core transformation. What's the big shift your work creates? From hidden to in-demand. From overwhelmed to grounded and strategic. From "one of many" to "the obvious choice". From expert to authority. This becomes the heart of your method.
  2. List everything you always do with clients. Everything. Don't filter it. Your edge lives in the things you've normalised, so the small stuff you think "everyone does" belongs on this list too.
  3. Group it into 3 to 6 phases. Look for patterns. What always comes first? What follows naturally? What builds on what? How does the journey progress, both practically and emotionally? This is where your intuition becomes a method.
  4. Name each phase. Names make your method memorable and give it a distinct identity as your IP. You might want to use an acronym, like I did with AUTHORity. Whatever you choose, it should sound like you.
  5. Explain why each phase matters. This is the authority piece. It's where your reader (or client) becomes certain that you're the person for them, because they can see the thinking behind every step.

A real example of the power of language

When someone asked my client Lucy at a networking event what she did, she said, "I'm a burnout mentor." True. But forgettable.

Once we'd established her edge, it became: "I'm the Founder of Sparkle Again. I help people reclaim energy, joy and emotional resilience after burnout so they can rebuild a life that lights them up."

Same work. Completely different positioning. That's what happens when your edge becomes clear, and it's exactly the kind of clarity your method and your book are built on.

How do I turn my signature method into a book?

Once your method exists, the structure of your book often falls into place surprisingly quickly. In AUTHORity, this sits in the Harness Your Message stage of my formula, and the process looks like this:

  1. Reflect on how you guide people. Think about the stages clients move through when they work with you. What happens first, what comes next and what outcome do they reach? You'll usually notice the same steps appearing again and again.
  2. Let your phases become your sections or chapters. Each phase of your method can become a part of your book, with chapters that explain the why, the how and the common sticking points.
  3. Keep it simple. The goal isn't to create something complicated. The most powerful frameworks are often the simplest.
  4. Pull out the lessons. For every story, example or stage, ask what it teaches your reader. Readers aren't only interested in what happened. They're interested in what it means for them.
  5. Connect it to your business. Your book teaches the method. Your offers help people implement it. That's how a book becomes a client-attraction asset, which I explain more in how writing a book gets you clients.

If you're still at the very beginning, my UK guide to writing a business book walks you through the whole process from idea to finished manuscript.

Can I use AI to help build my signature method?

Yes, with one important rule. AI should amplify your brilliance, never replace it. It can't create your method for you, but it can help you organise and refine it.

A few ways I use it:

  • Give it your business context first. The more it knows, the better the output.
  • Share your raw notes and ask it to spot themes, group them into phases and suggest a logical flow.
  • Ask for ten naming ideas for each phase, in a grounded, empowering tone.
  • Ask it to explain why each phase is essential and what makes your approach different.
  • Ask it to turn your method into a framework with a one-sentence promise, overview, phase breakdown and content pillars.

AI isn't the source. You are the source. It just helps you say what you already know more clearly.

Key takeaways

  • Most experienced business owners already have a signature method. It's just living in their head.
  • Your edge (identity, skill, perspective and transformation) comes before your method.
  • A strong signature method has an Anchor, 3 to 6 Phases, Proof and a Promise.
  • Build it by naming the transformation, listing everything you do, grouping it into phases, naming them and explaining why each one matters.
  • A method or framework book positions you as the originator of an approach, not just a service provider.
  • AI can help you organise and name your method, but the brilliance has to come from you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a signature method?

A signature method is the repeatable process you use to help clients get results, structured into clear, named phases. It turns what you do instinctively into something people can understand, trust and remember. It usually includes a core philosophy, 3 to 6 phases, proof of why it works and a promise about the transformation it creates.

How many steps should a signature method have?

Aim for between 3 and 6 phases. Fewer than three rarely captures the full journey, and more than six tends to confuse and overwhelm people. Each phase should move your client or reader closer to the outcome they want, in an order that makes sense both practically and emotionally.

What if I don't think I have a method?

You almost certainly do. If you get consistent results for clients, there's a pattern behind it. Start by listing everything you always do with clients, without filtering anything out. Then look for what always comes first and what naturally follows. The method is usually there. It just hasn't been named yet.

Should my signature method be an acronym?

It doesn't have to be, but it can help. I used an acronym for The AUTHORity® Book Formula™ because it makes the stages easy to remember. Some authors prefer simple numbered steps instead. What matters most is that the names are memorable and sound like you.

Can my signature method become a book?

Yes. A method or framework book is one of the most powerful authority-building books you can write. Each phase of your method can become a section of your book, with chapters explaining why it matters and how to apply it. It positions you as the originator of an approach and gives readers a clear next step.

Can AI create my signature method for me?

No, and it shouldn't. AI can help you organise your raw notes, suggest phase groupings and generate naming ideas, but the method itself comes from your experience, perspective and results. Use AI as a thinking partner to say what you already know more clearly, not as the source of your expertise.
